🌲 Stewardship Economy: Opportunities Through Living Trees and Healthy Forests
Frank Voelker has never seen himself as a traditional conservationist or someone who would one day fight to protect forests. However, immigrating from Germany to Canada in the late 1990s profoundly changed his life. Soon after arriving in his new home country, he began working with the Kwiakah First Nation on the West Coast of British Columbia. Through this partnership, he developed a new perspective on forests and came to understand the urgent threats they face.
At the same time, Frank discovered the powerful resilience of intact forest ecosystems. This inspired him to build a team of experts to explore and apply the principles of regenerative forestry. For nearly two decades, Frank and the Kwiakah First Nation have been working tirelessly to protect the forests in the Nation's traditional territory of Phillips Arm.
Frank collaborates with environmentalists, legal professionals, forest ecologists, and anthropologists in his efforts to advocate for forest protection. He also engages with conventional foresters and loggers, seeking common ground and understanding the motivations of those who view forests primarily through an industrial lens. Frank believes that bridging these perspectives is essential to achieving lasting change.
Whether in the forest, a boardroom, or a government office, Frank is committed to negotiating solutions that prevent ecological collapse. His advocacy work has included years of dialogue with government officials, particularly around the limitations of the 2016 Great Bear Rainforest legislation. Today, those efforts are starting to bear fruit, with growing recognition of the need for change.
Frank continues to use his platform to raise awareness about the vital role healthy forests play in addressing the climate crisis—and to inspire others to take action. His message is simple but powerful: if we take care of our forests, they will take care of us.
